  • Data cover

    A project's data printed as a cover: a grid of tiles or a score of cells, with an alt text and a legend.

  • Die line

    A box net with cut, fold and glue lines, for product crates and launches.

  • Edition number

    A numbering-machine impression for case studies, releases and builds: a paper slip, a perforated edge and a stamped number.

  • Flex word

    The one big display word that flexes on the width axis as the page scrolls past it.

  • Giant glyph

    One shape-alphabet glyph, huge and screened, bleeding off a corner of an art region.

  • Grain

    Paper tooth, speck and fibre on art and covers, never on a plate under words.

  • Halftone

    Tones as dots on a 45 degree screen, the fade and fringe that bleed art into the stock, and Ben-Day tints.

  • Ink drawdown

    An ink pulled down a test card to show its strength and its opacity over black. For colourways and client colours.

  • Ink field

    The moving gradient as printed art, in four modes. Fountain field by default, flat at Quiet, settled within five seconds at Studio.

  • Misregistration and the second ink

    Plates printed a hair out of register. On big display type it is the second ink, which lands off register and stays.

  • Overprint

    Inks that print over each other make a third colour: multiply on Bone, screen on Night, normal in Jewel.

  • Page wipe

    Three field-ink bands sweep across the page once when a link is followed, at Press and Rave.

  • Printer's marks

    Crop marks, registration targets, a colour bar and a slug that frame art like a press sheet.

  • Proof sheet

    Frames on a contact strip with the pick ringed in grease pencil. For work indexes and design rounds.

  • Shape glyph

    One glyph of the shape alphabet: fill, outline, halftone or misregistered.

  • Stamp

    A rubber-stamp impression for something that happened: Sent, Shipped, Approved. The seal rests in its own slot.

  • Sticker

    A die-cut sticker that marks a state or where something came from. It lands leaning and rests square.

  • Swatch chip

    An ink's reference chip: a solid block, its code and name, its value and, on request, its sanctioned pairs with their contrast.

  • Tape

    Masking or clear tape that pins a print to the page. The tape may lean; the print stays square.
