Display voices

Anybody's width axis gives the display type three voices. Standard for every heading; wide and condensed for short poster moments.

Display type in Overprint is Anybody, a variable family with a width axis from very condensed to very wide. The system uses that axis as a voice: standard is the near-normal upright that sets every heading, wide (italic) and condensed are for short poster moments, SFX and the volume dial (D-D2, D-D3).

The rules#

  • Standard is the default everywhere, and the only voice at Quiet.
  • Wide and condensed are for three words or fewer, on one line, at display sizes (R3 rule 11). A wide paragraph is unreadable; a condensed caption is a squint.
  • Widths outside 72 to 125 appear only inside motion moments and SFX; the lint rule mk/width-literal keeps them there.
  • One display moment per view at Studio, one per section at Press.

Voices and volume#

The volume dial does not change the voice; it changes the scale and weight of display type: × 0.92 and 30 lighter at Quiet, × 1.12 and 70 heavier at Press and Rave (capped at 900). The width axis only animates in the signature moments, such as a flex word or an SFX.

In code#

Set a voice on any element with data-mk-voice="standard" | "wide" | "condensed"; display roles read --mk-wd-<role>, --mk-wght-<role> and --mk-track-<role> from the voice block. The type page lists every role and its sizes.
