The volume dial decides how loud the expressive layer gets. The reading layer, the words and the controls, stays the same at every volume (D-B2). Turn it up for a poster, down for a contract.
The same card, four volumes#
Each frame holds its own volume, whatever your dial says (D-N2). Watch the art and the display type; the label, the body and the key do not move.

The dial as data#
Read straight from the tokens' volumes file, so this table cannot drift from what the press check measures.
| Volume | Used for | Colour budget | Chroma cap | Ink hues | Texture | Second ink | Motion | Tilt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quiet | docs, forms, legal, long-form, app work views | 10 % | 0.05 | 1 | 0 of 3 | off | calm | 0° |
| Studio | site pages, MAX//OS default | 35 % | 0.14 | 2 | 1 of 3 | display | balanced | 3° |
| Press | hero moments (up to Press), covers, campaigns, OG | 50 % | 0.18 | 4 | 2 of 3 | display-and-heads | arcade | 6° |
| Rave | 404, easter eggs, launches, posters, the dial's top | 75 % | gamut max | 7 | 3 of 3 | display-and-heads | overdrive | 12° |
Budgets and caps#
- Colour budget (D-B4): the share of a screen that may print in saturated ink at rest (OKLCH chroma 0.10 or more): Quiet 10 %, Studio 35 %, Press 50 %, Rave 75 %.
- Chroma cap (D-B5): any region larger than a tenth of the viewport stays under the cap: Quiet 0.05, Studio 0.14, Press 0.18, Rave the gamut. Small marks keep their full ink.
- Ink hues: distinct decorative hues per view (line marks and the action key do not count): Quiet 1, Studio 2, Press 4, Rave 7.
The press check measures all three on screenshots of every template at three widths, after motion settles.
Where each volume goes#
The site prints at Studio. A section may go one step louder than its page (a Studio page with one Press hero, like this site's home); covers and campaigns go to Press or Rave; the 404 is allowed a Rave. And every visitor has a dial of their own, in the header and the footer, remembered before the first paint.
One step louder, never two
A section can raise the volume by one step over its page. Specimen frames on these docs are the one exception: they are labelled, bounded and exist to show every volume.
